82-0 Baseball

82-0 belongs to basketball, where the regular season is 82 games. Baseball plays twice that. An MLB regular season is 162 games, so baseball's perfect season is 162-0 — a number so far from anything the sport has produced that it is almost a different kind of question.

Baseball's perfect season is 162-0

MLB has played a 162-game schedule since the early 1960s, so the undefeated version reads 162-0. The 82 is basketball's: an NBA season is 82 games, and the NHL plays 82 as well. The Premier League plays 38 and the NFL 17. Baseball simply has the longest schedule of the four, which makes its perfect season the least plausible of all of them.

Length is only half of it. Baseball is the sport where the best teams lose constantly by design — a rotation means a different starting pitcher every night, and a single hot opposing arm can beat anybody regardless of how the rosters compare. A great baseball team is one that loses sixty times.

The schedule also runs almost every day for six months, with no equivalent of a basketball team's built-in rest. A baseball club plays series rather than one-offs, so a bad matchup is not one night but three or four in a row — another reason unbeaten stretches in baseball are measured in a dozen games rather than thirty.

How close baseball has come

The best record in the sport's history is 116 wins, reached twice: the 1906 Chicago Cubs at 116-36 and the 2001 Seattle Mariners at 116-46 across the longer modern schedule. The Cubs' winning percentage of .763 is the highest ever posted, and it still leaves thirty-six losses on the board.

Put that next to basketball and the difference is clear. The 2015-16 Warriors lost nine games all year and that was a record; a record-setting baseball team loses four times as many and nobody considers it a flaw. 162-0 is not a target anyone has approached — it is a thought experiment, which is precisely what makes it worth simulating.

Winning streaks tell the same story. The longest of the modern era is the 2017 Cleveland club's 22 straight, inside a 102-60 season. Twenty-two consecutive wins is extraordinary in baseball and it still covers only about an eighth of the schedule, where basketball's 33-game Lakers streak covered nearly half of one.

Playing both versions

This page runs the basketball game. Draft five players from across NBA history and the engine plays all 82 games, judging each pick on how those players actually performed. The record it is measured against is 73-9, set by the 2015-16 Warriors, one win better than the 1995-96 Bulls at 72-10.

For the baseball edition, the 162-0 Challenge applies the same format to a full MLB season, with the longer schedule and the extra losses that come with it. The site also carries 38-0 for Premier League soccer, 20-0 for a perfect NFL run and 82-0 NHL for hockey's identical 82-game season.

The contrast is the interesting part. Play a run here and then a run at 162-0 and the difference in how the two sports punish a flawed roster is immediate — basketball concentrates value in five names, while baseball spreads it thin enough that no five could ever carry it.
