82-0 Soccer

82-0 is a basketball line, and soccer does not play 82 games. A Premier League season is 38, so soccer's version of the perfect season is 38-0 — and it is arguably harder than the basketball original, for one reason basketball never has to deal with.

82-0 for soccer is 38-0

The Premier League plays 38 matches, so a flawless season reads 38-0. The 82 comes from basketball, where an NBA regular season is 82 games long; the NHL happens to play 82 as well, MLB plays 162, and the NFL 17. Every sport keeps the idea and changes the number.

Soccer's problem is the draw. Basketball has no mechanism for finishing level, so every game resolves into a win or a loss and a perfect season only requires winning. In the league system a draw costs two points without anybody losing, which means 38-0 demands something considerably stronger than being unbeaten.

The 38 is itself a product of league size. Twenty clubs playing each other home and away is 38 matches; a 24-team division is 46, which is why the Championship's perfect season would be a different number again. Basketball's 82 comes from a fixed schedule rather than from league size, so it stays put as teams come and go.

The Invincibles went unbeaten and still missed

Arsenal's 2003-04 side went the entire Premier League season without a defeat and finished 26-12-0 — twenty-six wins, twelve draws, no losses. It is the only unbeaten 38-game season in the competition's history and is rightly remembered as the ceiling, and it is still twelve results short of 38-0.

That gap is the whole argument. Unbeaten is a record soccer has actually produced; perfect is not, and nothing suggests it is coming. Scorelines make the point from the other direction — goals are scarce enough that the biggest margin in Premier League history is 9-0, in a sport where a single goal decides most matches.

Cup competitions are where soccer gets closest to a clean sweep, simply because there are fewer games to win. A World Cup run from the group stage to the final is seven matches, which is why 7-0 is a number real teams have actually reached — Brazil won all seven on the way to the 2002 title.

Where to play each version

This page runs the basketball game: draft five players from NBA history and the engine plays out all 82 games. The NBA has not managed 82-0 either, with the record standing at 73-9 for the 2015-16 Warriors, just past the 1995-96 Bulls at 72-10.

For the soccer edition, the 38-0 Challenge is the same format built on Premier League clubs and eras — spin a club, draft an XI of real legends and chase the perfect season Arsenal did not quite reach. There is also a 7-0 version for a World Cup run, which is seven matches from the group stage to the final.

All the versions share the same structure: a random roll for club or era, a draft built on real players, and a season or tournament simulated to a result. Pick the sport you actually argue about and chase its number.
