82-0 Football
82-0 is a basketball line — 82 regular-season games, none of them lost. Football does not play 82 games in any of its codes, so "football 82-0" is really two questions depending on which football you mean. Both answers are below, and the basketball original is playable on this page.
Which football are you asking about?
If football means the NFL, the regular season is 17 games, so the perfect version is 17-0. Add the three playoff rounds a top seed plays to reach the Super Bowl and the full unbeaten run becomes 20-0. If football means soccer, a Premier League season is 38 games, so the perfect season there is 38-0. Neither league plays 82.
The 82 comes from basketball. An NBA regular season is 82 games, and the NHL happens to play 82 as well, which is why 82-0 became the shorthand for a flawless season even among people who do not watch basketball. MLB plays 162. The number moves with the sport; the idea behind it does not.
There is a third football as well. Australian rules and rugby league both get called football by their supporters, and neither plays anything close to 82 games. The point is general: season length is a scheduling accident, so the perfect-season number is different everywhere and only the shape of the achievement carries across.
How close each football has come
The NFL has produced exactly one unbeaten, untied season: the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who won all 14 regular-season games under the shorter schedule and kept going through the playoffs to finish 17-0 with Super Bowl VII. The modern near-miss is the 2007 New England Patriots, 16-0 through what was then a 16-game regular season before losing Super Bowl XLII to end 18-1.
Soccer's version is harder in a way the scoreline hides, because a draw is not a win. Arsenal's 2003-04 Invincibles went the entire Premier League season without losing and still finished 26-12-0 — twelve draws short of a perfect 38-0. Going unbeaten and going perfect are different achievements, and only one of them has ever been done.
Schedule length also flatters the comparison. Seventeen chances to slip is far fewer than eighty-two, so an NFL perfect season sounds more reachable — but each Sunday carries a tenth of the year, and a single upset ends it outright. A longer season gives you more ways to fail and more room to recover, and which is harder is genuinely arguable.
