82-0 vs Connections

Both are daily games with a fixed shape, finished in a few minutes, and both punish confidence. Connections punishes it immediately and visibly; 82-0 takes a whole simulated season to tell you that a pick you liked was wrong.

One right answer vs many defensible ones

Connections has a single correct solution. Sixteen words split into four groups of four, the categories deliberately overlap, and the difficulty comes from traps — words that sit comfortably in the wrong group until the right group appears. Every player who solves it ends up at the same grid.

82-0 has no single correct draft. Two people given identical conditions can build completely different fives and both be reasonable, because the question is not what the answer is but which risks you accept. That makes comparing results murkier and arguing about them much better.

Both games do share a shape, which is why the comparison comes up at all: a small fixed number of commitments, made under uncertainty, in a single short sitting. Four groups or five players, the interesting part is the same — deciding when you are confident enough to lock something in.

Mistakes you can see vs mistakes you find out about

Connections gives you four mistakes and tells you instantly, and the "one away" message is the whole emotional design of the game — you learn you were wrong while you can still fix it. The feedback loop is tight enough that you improve inside a single puzzle.

82-0 withholds everything until the season runs. A lineup with no rim protection looks fine on the draft screen and then quietly loses the close games, and you only learn which flaw mattered once the record comes back. The lesson arrives at the end rather than in the middle, so it takes more runs to internalise.

The difference shows in how each game teaches. Connections teaches within the puzzle, because the traps are visible once sprung. 82-0 teaches across puzzles, because a single season tells you very little: a good draft can lose and a sloppy one can reach 70 wins. The signal only separates from the noise after several runs.

If Connections is your daily habit

Play the daily run first — same commitment, same once-a-day rhythm, and the same starting conditions for everybody, which is the thing that makes a daily game worth comparing scores on.

If what you actually like is the constraint-solving rather than the deduction, One Franchise mode narrows the pool to a single team's history and One Decade limits you to a single era. Both turn the draft into a knowledge puzzle with a much smaller solution space, which is a good deal closer to what Connections is doing.

The site also has a direct comparison with Wordle, which is the other daily habit people arrive from. It covers this same ground from the deduction side if that is the part you care about.

One last practical difference: Connections is over the moment the grid resolves, while an 82-0 run leaves you with a roster you will want to defend. That is the part people come back for — not the record itself, but the argument about whether the five you picked deserved a better one.
